Bioenergy / Primary Industries and Government Relations

  • Led development of the Australian Biochar Industry 2030 Roadmap, believed to be the world’s first biochar industry roadmap (ANZ Biochar Industry Group).
  • Developed the Residues Utilisation and Stewardship Strategy for forestry and sawmilling, including case studies and trials development incorporating bioenergy, biochar, technology development and related activities. Identified the industry-relevant benefits for investment in forestry and sawmilling residues usage opportunities, identified policy barriers and developed an integrated stewardship strategy across a range of product types and sustainability aspects for the North East NSW Coast incorporating industry-specific case studies. (North East NSW Forestry Hub)
  • Assist Biochar Opportunity Assessment and strategies for incorporating biosolids into biochar. (South East Water)
  • Appointed to ANZ Biochar Industry Group (ANZBIG) Advisory Board.
  • Regulatory affairs and corporate strategy assistance for a $50 million initiative to convert Verdant Earth Technologies (previously Redbank Power Station) into a full bioenergy power plant able to produce enough energy to power 200-250,000 homes. (Hunter Energy Pty Ltd)
  • Developed and led Bioenergy Stakeholder Engagement Working Group to engage key stakeholders in identifying and addressing barriers and opportunities to using biomass for energy in NSW. (NSW Department of Primary Industries)
  • Led site visits, case studies, regulatory / governmental affairs advice and development of Transforming Wood Residues to Bioenergy: A Step-by-Step Guide. (jointly commissioned by the NSW Department of Industry – Lands & Forestry and Timber NSW, supported through the NSW Forest Industries Task Force)
  • Led the application process and gained NSW EPA approval of resource recovery orders and exemptions for supply of bottom ash, wood fibre and blended wood fibre for land application. (Weathertex)
  • Regulatory affairs guidance and technical expertise to address NSW EPA concerns and gain development approval for circular economy reuse on behalf of a large corporate client and their investors. This includes applying for resource recovery orders and exemptions for the materials involved.
  • Three regional workshops on the North Coast of NSW on the regulatory environment associated with the development of bioenergy projects. (NSW Department of Industry)

National / International Product Stewardship Analyses and Advice

  • Assist Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment in their review of the Product Stewardship Act 2011 through independent research and advice. (in conjunction with Helen Lewis Research)
  • Independent peer review and technical advice to assist in finalising recommendations for electrical and electronic product stewardship in New Zealand. (TechCollect NZ)
  • Assessed international product stewardship and extended producer responsibility (EPR) models for sharps and unwanted medicines for Eli Lilly and Company, a US-based global pharmaceutical company.
  • Founded and convened the International Stewardship Forum series, with the inaugural Forum held in Sydney April 2018 (over 130 attendees and 13 international speakers) and the second Forum held in Paris July 2019 (250 attendees from 30 countries, including representatives from 17 countries’ Ministries for Environment or their equivalent).
  • Independent Chair leading development of a national product stewardship approach for handheld batteries in Australia.
  • Led technical content and stakeholder engagement on a national product stewardship framework for e-waste / waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in New Zealand.
  • Analysis of overseas best practice approaches to increase packaging recovery and decrease packaging litter under the Packaging Impacts Consultation Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) for the Australian Environment Protection and Heritage Council.

Stakeholder Engagement and Facilitation

  • Developed and led Bioenergy Stakeholder Engagement Working Group to engage key stakeholders in identifying and addressing barriers and opportunities to using biomass for energy in NSW. (NSW Department of Primary Industries)
  • Led modified Chatham House discussions with select stakeholders during the International Stewardship Forums in Sydney 2018 (to discuss key learnings and implications for Australian Government policy) and in Paris 2019 (for the French Ministry of Environment).
  • Issues development, briefings and stakeholder engagement on a voluntary national product stewardship model for sharps (in Washington DC for US healthcare industry).
  • Three regional workshops on the North Coast of NSW on the regulatory environment associated with the development of bioenergy projects. (NSW Department of Industry)
